Keeping Your Basement Dry

August 17th 2010 15:56
Through techniques that are used in basement waterproofing, it can be simple to ensure that the basement stays dry through the wettest of seasons and your home and belongings on the lower level are protected from the potential damage of water.

What is basement waterproofing? Basement waterproofing is the implementation of techniques to ensure that there is no flooding within the basements. Many of the techniques can be completed at home, without professional assistance, and other techniques require professional help from contractors in the case that there are underlying problems causing the basement to leak.

There are certain things that the homeowner should ensure to make sure that the basement stays dry. One of the most important things to do to make sure that the basement remains dry is to keep water flowing away from the home. Ensuring that eaves troughs are in good working order without leaks through the roof of the home and ensuring that the ground around the home is level and conducive to allowing water to flow away from the home are both essential in ensuring that the home is going to remain dry through the underground levels.

Ensuring that gutters and downspouts are at least five to six feet away from the home can ensure that the basement is able to reduce the moisture that it will create. This way, the water is far enough away from the house for the water to flow away without causing impact to the basement through floods and other moisture problems.

Using materials around the home like rocks and gravel, rather than soil, can ensure that the area around the basement remains dry. Using these materials, the homeowner can allow the area around the home to retain less water as these materials are also able to dry quicker, avoiding water pooling around the home and causing leaks through the basement area.

Through the finish of the basement there are many things that can be done to keep the basement dry, including through the use of waterproof drywall and paint. Ensuring that vents are in place to reduce the moisture in the basement can also be an effective way to ensure that the basement stays dry. Using all of these tips, you shouldn’t have to worry about a flood in the near future.
